Seattle Magazine Publishes Little House/Big Shed as AIA “Home of Distinction”

May, 2021 Volume 32, Number 3- “Tucked into the trees… seemingly at one with nature.” Little House/Big Shed is published in Seattle Magazine as this issue’s “Home of Distinction”. The project was selected for this honor by a panel of architects through AIA Seattle’s Home of Distinction Awards program.

Little House/Big Shed Wins AIA Seattle Honor Awards Recognition

Nov. 2020Citing the simple and elegant design of the project and it’s intimate connection to the landscape, Little House/Big Shed was Honored with an Honorable Mention Award. As the only residential project to receive an award in this year’s program, the Jury commented: “There were many beautiful, beautiful residential projects, but this one really came to the top for us because it wove all (the design elements) into a very simply, but beautifully and elegantly designed and constructed project.”

AIA Seattle Honors David Van Galen Architecture for Meeting 2030 Challenge

Nov. 2020 – As part of AIA Seattle’s annual Honor Awards program, the Little House/Big Shed project was one of 16 projects recognized for its firm meeting the 2030 challenge. The 2030 challenge is part of the AIA’s commitment to “transform the practice of architecture in a way that is holistic, firm-wide, project based, and data-driven” by prioritizing energy performance in design.


A Brief History… work prior to forming David Van Galen Architecture

In addition to more recent honors for the quality of his residential work, David’s past work as a design leader in previous firms has been recognized at the local, regional, and national level for its sensitivity to context, it’s direct solutions to complex client requirements, and its expressive quality.

In over 15 years working with LMN Architects, David contributed to many of the iconic buildings in Seattle, including Benaroya Hall, The Washington State Trade and Convention Center Expansion, Marion Oliver McCaw Hall, the Foster School of Business and the Paul G Allen Center for Computer Science and Engineering on the UW Campus. David led the design of projects as diverse as commercial office buildings, master planning for convention centers across the United States and internationally, and research buildings on multiple university campuses. 

From 2009 until 2020, as the Principal-in-charge of Design for Integrus Architecture’s Seattle office, his work focused primarily on innovative design solutions for the needs of public schools.  Recognized nationally for his innovative solutions, David was appointed to the AIA Committee on Architecture for Education (AIA-CAE) Leadership Group, helping to shape the discourse nationally around the design needs for educational facilities.
